The U.S. Supreme Court held that federal courts may exercise jurisdiction over applications to confirm or vacate arbitral awards solely where jurisdiction is established on the facts present in the application and may not look through to the underlying controversy in arbitration to identify a federal question. The U.S. Chamber filed a merits stage amicus brief urging the opposite result.
